On Back Wynd, a narrow lane off Union Street beside the Kirk of St Nicholas, Ninety-Nine calls itself a neighbourhood cocktail bar, and that is exactly how it feels.

Behind a big window lettered in gold, a long wooden bar glows under strings of lights, with a gallery above and plants tumbling over the rail.

The promise is simple: warm lights, good music and drinks made well. The cocktail list runs from classics to tropical creations served in vases of crushed ice, and the bartenders are happy to make something off the menu if you ask. The kitchen is better than most bars, with burgers, bar plates and brunch plates of waffles, eggs and crisp potatoes.

It is a relaxed, friendly place, a mix of cocktail bar and local pub, with regulars at the bar. Ninety-Nine opens from Thursday to Monday, in the afternoon until late.
