On Schoolhill, in the part of central Aberdeen known as the Culture Quarter, Grub is a handy stop between the Art Gallery and the shops.

It is one of a small family of Grub cafes around the city, all built around the same simple idea: fresh food made to order, and good coffee.

The chalkboard tells you how it works. Pick a base, a panini, a toasted wrap, a baguette or a salad, then a filling, each with its own name, and it is made while you wait. There are croissants and pastries in the morning, brownies and traybakes in the afternoon, and yoghurt pots for something lighter.

Inside, an old stone wall is lined with shelves, and there are tables to sit at. Dogs are welcome. Grub opens every day from breakfast time until half past five.
