Welcome

There's something special about a walled garden on a summer's afternoon, and Greenbank feels a world away from the suburbs of Glasgow's south side, though they lie less than a mile off.

The house went up in the 1760s, and the walled garden was built with it to grow fruit and vegetables for the kitchen. Today it is planted to give home gardeners ideas, with more than 3,600 named plants and a National Collection of bergenias.

Come in spring for the daffodils, around 545 varieties of them in the walled garden and the woods. Tall beeches and Scots pines shelter the whole place, and woodland walks wind round it. The National Trust for Scotland has cared for it since 1976. The garden opens daily from April to the end of October, the café has seats indoors and out, and dogs are welcome.
