Welcome

At Bowhouse, among the old stone farm buildings between Elie and St Monans, Futtle is a small organic brewery with a taproom.

Visited and photographed by Simon Hird

Lucy and Stephen started it in 2019, inspired by the farmhouse brewing of northern Europe and the coast they look out on.

Everything they make is organic, brewed with whole grains and whole leaf hops and water drawn from a borehole behind the brewery. There are light table beers, pales and wheat beers, and seasonal beers built round plants gathered from the beaches and hedgerows nearby. Some rest for months in wooden barrels with fruit and fresh hops, and since 2022 they have been making wild beers in an open coolship.

In the taproom, under old beams hung with plants, you can drink their beer fresh from the tank, try natural wines, organic cocktails or kombucha, and eat pastries and toasties. Up on the mezzanine is a record shop with vinyl from all over the world. Children and dogs are welcome.
