Crail Pottery

A family pottery round a courtyard in Crail, founded in 1965, where every pot is thrown, painted and fired on the spot and sold only from the pottery.

Off Nethergate in Crail, a narrow lane between whitewashed walls opens into a courtyard crowded with pots.

Timber shelves under the trees are stacked with planters, jugs and bowls, and through the doors on every side are the workshops and the showroom of Crail Pottery.

Stephen and Carol Grieve started the pottery in 1965, and it is still a family affair: their daughter Sarah, their son Ben, his wife Jane and their grandson Timothy all work here, and Stephen has no plans ever to retire. Every piece is thrown on the wheel, decorated, glazed and fired on site, so no two are quite alike. There is sturdy stoneware, terracotta for the garden, raku with its crackled glazes, and earthenware painted in bright colours.

You can watch the potters at work, browse at leisure and sit a while in the quiet yard. The pots are sold only here, so whatever you take home came straight from the kiln.
