Beinn a' Bheithir - Sgorr Dhearg

A Munro of 1,024 metres, the higher top of Beinn a' Bheithir above Ballachulish, climbed from Gleann a' Chaolais by the forest path to the col.

Welcome

Sgorr Dhearg, 1,024 metres, is the higher of the two Munros on Beinn a' Bheithir, the mountain that rises just south of Ballachulish.

Its twin, Sgorr Dhonuill, is less than two kilometres to the west. The Glencoe Folk Museum gives the mountain's name as the Peak of the Thunderbolt, or sometimes of the Dragon, and Sgorr Dhearg's as the Red Peak. Glenachulish forest, kept by Forestry and Land Scotland, lies at the mountain's foot inside a National Scenic Area.

Walkers climb it from the car park in Gleann a' Chaolais, by the path up through the forest to the col between the two Munros and then east up the ridge. The avalanche service's nearest forecast is Glencoe's, and its wording does not name this hill, but under snow the risk is here all the same. Choose a day with a good forecast, and carry a map, a compass and warm clothes.
