Battleship Hill

Cnoc Carnach, a short, steep climb from Oban's front through Dunollie Woods to a view over Kerrera, Mull and Lismore.

Welcome

Battleship Hill, whose real name is Cnoc Carnach, rises 420 feet above the northern edge of Oban, and it is one of the best short climbs in the area: a quick walk that ends in a very big view.

An easy stroll along the front takes you to the start, and the path then winds up through Dunollie Woods before a steep last push to the top.

There is no made path for that final stretch, so wear good shoes. From the summit on a clear day the view runs round over Oban Bay and the island of Kerrera to Mull, Lismore and Ardnamurchan, and on round to Ben Cruachan in the east, with the ferries coming and going far below. It is rarely busy, so there is every chance of having the top to yourself, and it makes a fine hour or two out of town before or after a ferry.
