The craggy face of Am Bodach with a wisp of cloud on its top, a grassy ridge running up to it.

Am Bodach

A Munro of 1,032 metres in the Mamores above Kinlochleven, climbed from the West Highland Way by an old stalkers' path.

Welcome

Am Bodach, 1,032 metres, stands in the Mamores, the range with Glen Nevis on one side and Kinlochleven on the other.

The village, at the head of Loch Leven, is about two miles away in a straight line, and the hill is the hundredth highest of the 282 Munros. Stob Coire a' Chairn is just over a kilometre to the north-east, Sgurr a' Mhaim about two kilometres to the north-west and Na Gruagaichean a little further off to the east.

On its own it is climbed from Kinlochleven, by the West Highland Way out of the village and an old stalkers' path to the bealach west of the summit, then up the hill's long west shoulder. It is also one of the four Munros of the Ring of Steall, from Glen Nevis. The Lochaber avalanche forecast does not name the Mamores, but under snow the risk is here all the same. Choose a day with a good forecast, and carry a map, a compass and warm clothes.

The Daily for 4 November, from Scotland with love. A pink sandstone castle bristling with conical turrets and a Union Jack flag rises above a gravel forecourt, autumn-tinged ivy climbing one wing beside cannon displayed on the lawn.
