Sgurr a' Mhaim

A Munro of 1,099 metres in the Mamores above Glen Nevis, climbed from the Lower Falls by its north-west shoulder.

Welcome

Sgurr a' Mhaim, 1,099 metres, stands in the Mamores, the range above Glen Nevis.

It is number 51 of the 282 Munros, and higher than any of its near neighbours: Am Bodach, Stob Ban, Stob Coire a' Chairn and An Gearanach all stand about two kilometres away. Below it in Glen Nevis is the Steall gorge, whose path the John Muir Trust helps to look after.

Walkers climb it from the Lower Falls in Glen Nevis, up its long north-west shoulder. Many know it for the Ring of Steall, which Mountaineering Scotland names alongside the Carn Mor Dearg Arete as one of Lochaber's celebrated routes, with a scrambling course for those who want to tackle it. Mountaineering Scotland warns that scrambling grades are set for dry summer conditions, and that in anything less the same ground becomes much more difficult and dangerous. The avalanche service's Lochaber forecast does not name the Mamores, but under snow the risk is here all the same. Choose a day with a good forecast, and carry a map, a compass and warm clothes.
