Dumyat – A Morning on the Hill and Lunch at Blairmains
About 4.3 miles on foot.

Dumyat is the craggy western end of the Ochils, the hill that rises behind the Wallace Monument as you look out from Stirling.
At 418 metres it's a small hill with a very big view: the monument, the town and its castle, and the Forth looping away down its valley towards Edinburgh. Afterwards, drive round to Blairmains, a family farm right below the hill's crags, for lunch in its Coffee Bothy.
- Time
- Two to two and a half hours: about 7 km, or four and a quarter miles, there and back from Pendreich, with about 290 m of climb.
- The path
- A hill path through birchwoods and over open hillside to a rocky top, muddy after rain and rocky in places. Boots.
- Where to start
- Forestry and Land Scotland's Pendreich car park, a mile up the steep, single-track Sheriffmuir Road from Bridge of Allan (nearest postcode FK9 4LS). Free during the day; no overnight parking except on Forestry and Land Scotland's motorhome scheme. It fills early on a fine weekend: there are more pull-ins further up the road; never the passing places.
- Set off
- By 10am for lunch at Blairmains; from November to February start up by noon.
- When to go
- All year in daylight, in clear weather.
- Dogs
- On a short lead or close at heel from April to July, when birds nest on the open hill, and near any farm animals (the Scottish Outdoor Access Code).
- Children
- A good first hill for children who can manage about 290 m of climb; the top is rocky and exposed.
- Toilets
- None at the car park; the nearest public toilets are in Bridge of Allan or Stirling.
- Before you set out
- In snow and ice the path needs winter gear.
The walk
The walk starts from Forestry and Land Scotland's Pendreich car park on the Sheriffmuir Road above Bridge of Allan. The hill path sets off through birchwoods and comes out onto open hillside, climbing steadily to a rocky top. Up there are a white trig point, a beacon filled with stones and a memorial to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, placed within sight of the regiment's headquarters at Stirling Castle.
The view is the reason to come. The Wallace Monument stands on its crag below you, with Stirling and the castle beyond, and the Forth winds away east down its wide, flat valley. You come down the way you went up.
As hills go it's an easy one, but the top is bare and exposed, so bring a waterproof and something warm.
If it rains
In rain or low cloud there's nothing to see from the top and the path turns to mud, so keep Dumyat for a clear day. On a wet morning, go straight to Blairmains for breakfast, served until noon, and a wander round the farm shop.
Afterwards

Blairmains Farm Shop
Lunch
It's 9 minutes' drive to Blairmains, back down through Bridge of Allan and east along the A91 past the university, to a family farm right below the crags of Dumyat. Its Coffee Bothy is open every day, with breakfast until noon and then lunch until the kitchen closes at 4pm, 3.45pm on Sundays: soup of the day, macaroni cheese, or the freshly battered haddock and chips that's a Bothy favourite. If it's full, Legends at the Monument, the coffee house at the foot of the Wallace Monument, is a few minutes back towards Stirling, with its kitchen open until 4pm in winter.
