The Border Hotel
Kirk Yetholm's village inn, at the head of the green below the Cheviot Hills, a mile inside Scotland.
There's no better place to end a day in the hills than the Border Hotel, which has welcomed travellers in Kirk Yetholm since 1750.
Look for the thatched roof, then settle into the cosy bar by the open fire with a Scottish whisky or a local craft beer. This is where the Pennine Way ends after 268 miles, and walkers who finish it are offered a half pint on the house and a certificate to say they have done it. St Cuthbert's Way passes through the village too, on its way from Melrose to Holy Island. The cooking is home-made, with eggs, vegetables and meat often from Borders farms, and the menu changes with the seasons. Eat in the bar, swapping stories with the locals, in the Fisherman's Room or the conservatory, or out in the garden on a summer's day, where the gazebo gives a little shade. Booking ahead for a meal is a good idea.

The bar opens at 11.30am, seven days a week.
