Back after nearly eight decades, this event pits local teams from north and south Stromness in a tug of war over a 400kg yule log pulled through the town’s winding cobbled lanes. Two contests, junior and senior, take place on Hogmanay before onlookers in the Pierhead area, with musical accompaniment, staged goals and a fireworks finale to mark the year’s final hour. It is part ritual, part lively street competition, organised by local volunteers and rooted in community. Road closures are in place for safety and the event draws crowds to the heart of the town.
