Welcome

St Mary's at Auchindoir is one of the finest medieval parish churches left in the north-east, a simple oblong of the late thirteenth century whose walls still stand to their full height.

It was remodelled in the early sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and used until the early nineteenth, when a new church was built to the east. That one is now a shell too.

A stone cross tops the east gable and a seventeenth-century bellcote the west. The way in is through the south door, a round-arched doorway of the thirteenth century with its carved mouldings still crisp. Inside, on the north wall, is the church's treasure, a sacrament house of the sixteenth century, unusually shaped and finely carved, where the consecrated bread was kept. Look for the piscina and the aumbries too, the small stone cupboards where the altar vessels were stored.

There is a little parking at the site, which is not suitable for coaches. The Rhynie stones are a few minutes away.
