St Aloysius Church

Glasgow's Jesuit church on Garnethill, opened in 1910 after the cathedral of Namur, with a 150-foot campanile, a marble interior and the shrine of St John Ogilvie.

Welcome

High on Garnethill, above Sauchiehall Street, a slender red sandstone campanile with a golden dome rises 150 feet over the rooftops.

It belongs to St Aloysius, the Jesuit church of Glasgow. The Jesuits took over a parish in the city in 1859, and for about forty years they worshipped in an iron and glass building known as Fr Kay's Railway Shed, for its likeness to Queen Street station.

The present church was designed by the Belgian-born architect Charles Menart in the Renaissance style of the seventeenth century, after the cathedral of Namur in Belgium. The foundation stone went down in October 1908 and it opened on 6 February 1910. Inside, under a domed crossing and a painted ceiling, the walls are lined with marble, Jesuit saints fill the stained glass, and in the east transept is the shrine of St John Ogilvie, the Jesuit put to death in Glasgow in 1615, with mosaics of his story. The church is open to visitors every day.
