Sabhal Mòr Ostaig – Gaelic College & Culture Centre
The national centre for Gaelic language and culture at Sleat, a working college where a visitor can buy a book, take a coffee, and sit in on a conversation circle if the day is right.
A working college rather than an attraction, and the only one in the world that teaches entirely through Gaelic.
Sir Iain Noble founded it in 1973 in the old farm steadings at Ostaig, and a village is now being built around it, the first planned village on Skye in nearly a century.
There is no ticket and no admission. Park, walk into reception at Arainn Chaluim Chille, and the College Shop beside it sells books, postcards, gifts, and tea and coffee and cake to anyone who wants them. Walking the teaching spaces needs a tour arranged by email first, and they are glad to give one.
Better still is to time it. Monday evenings there is a free Gaelic conversation circle in the cafe, beginners at six and fluent speakers at seven. Thursdays bring a knitting club at lunchtime and a reading circle in the library.

This is a working college rather than an attraction.
There is no admission and no ticket desk. Make for reception in the main building, Arainn Chaluim Chille; the College Shop beside it is open the same hours and sells books, postcards, gifts and college merchandise, along with tea, coffee and something sweet. Parking is free and plentiful at the three buildings. What you cannot do is wander the teaching spaces: a tour has to be arranged by email beforehand, and they are glad to give one. What is worth timing a visit for is the free community sessions, which anyone may join.
