Mother India's Cafe sits on Argyle Street directly across the road from Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, behind a long plum-coloured front with its name in gold.
It opened in 2004 as the small-plates sister of Mother India, and it has an Edinburgh café too.
The idea is Indian cooking served like tapas: order several small dishes and share them round the table, so you can try more of the menu in one sitting. The cooking leans to light, traditional Indian dishes: curries come in little copper pans, with bowls of rice, salads and baskets of naan scattered with almonds. The room is comfortable and characterful, with green tiled walls, red leather banquettes, bentwood chairs and black and white portraits in frames. It suits a quick lunch before the museum or a long dinner with friends. Mother India's Cafe is open every day from noon, until half past nine from Sunday to Thursday and until ten on Friday and Saturday.
