Findhorn Ecovillage

The community at the Park by Findhorn, begun on a caravan site in 1962 and now a model of sustainable living, with timber houses, a shop and tours.

Welcome

On the road into Findhorn, among the pines and dunes, lies the Park, home to one of the best known communities in the world.

Visited and photographed by Simon Hird

It began in 1962 on a caravan site, and has grown into an ecovillage recognised by the United Nations as a model of sustainable living.

Houses of every shape and colour line the roads, many of them built by hand from timber, some with turf roofs or round windows, others covered in solar panels. There are gardens, a nature sanctuary, the Universal Hall for gatherings, and the Phoenix shop beneath a huge yew tree.

Visitors are welcome at any time. Guided tours leave the Visitors Centre at two o'clock on set days, mostly in summer, and on the first and third Friday of each month there are guided walks through the dunes and woods, where red squirrels live. There are courses, meditations and events all through the year.
