Canna Community Shop
Overview
Canna Community Shop sits close to the harbour, serving the island’s residents and visitors alike with a modest but thoughtful range of goods. Inside, the shelves hold fresh vegetables when available, fruit, milk, bread, tinned items, and household staples. There’s a freezer, a drinks fridge, and a small display of handmade crafts, postcards, and locally made preserves.
Though compact, the shop is carefully stocked, with deliveries coming in regularly from the mainland. Items are priced fairly considering the island’s remote setting. Visitors arriving on foot from the ferry often stop in straight away—either for a quick drink or to pick up a few days’ worth of supplies for self-catering accommodation. There’s often a small book swap shelf and seasonal items depending on the time of year.
What makes the shop distinctive is its unmanned hours. Outside of staffed times, an honesty box system allows customers to serve themselves. A till, scales, and clear instructions are in place, and the approach works well—built on trust and practicality. The shop also doubles as a hub for notices, lost items, local updates, and informal chats, especially when the post office section is open.
There’s no café or seating attached, but the view across the bay is immediate, and many visitors sit nearby to take a break or check their route across the island. While not flashy, the shop reflects the character of Canna—steady, self-reliant, and welcoming without fuss.

Location
The shop is located near the centre of the harbour area, a short walk from the ferry landing and directly across from Café Canna. It shares a space with the post office and is part of the same cluster of community buildings at the east end of the bay.
What's nearby
Steps away are Café Canna and the island’s main pier. Nearby paths lead toward Canna House, the community garden, and walking routes across to Sanday via the bridge. A short walk west brings visitors to the early Christian site of A’Chill and its carved stones. Everything is easily reached on foot.
