Callendar House
A turreted mansion of 14th-century origin in Callendar Park, Falkirk, with a working Georgian kitchen, a tearoom and free entry.
Callendar House is one of the grandest days out in Falkirk, and it's free.
The house dates back to the 14th century, and its long, turreted front stands at the head of a wide lawn in Callendar Park. Inside, an exhibition tells the story of the house, with displays on the Antonine Wall and on Falkirk's industrial past, and exhibitions of contemporary art. The Georgian Kitchen is a working 19th-century kitchen where staff in period costume make the visit a hands-on one. There's a tearoom for a cuppa and cake, and afternoon tea in the Drawing Room if you book ahead. Outside, the ditch of the Roman Antonine Wall runs through the park, and there's a Roman-themed play park for the children. Parking is free, and the house opens every day except Tuesday.
