Places to Stay in Sutherland

Sutherland is a land of big skies, empty sandy beaches and lone mountains rising out of the moor. These are our favourite places to stay across it, from a boutique hotel in Dornoch to cottages on the shores of the lochs along the north coast.

Updated 23 September 2026. Across Sutherland.

Drive north through Sutherland and the land opens right up. Ben Loyal and Ben Hope stand alone above the moor, the sea lochs reach deep inland, and the north coast is lined with pale sandy beaches. In the east, Dornoch is a handsome little town with its cathedral and famous golf links.

We've picked out places to stay right across the county. There's a five-star hotel in a former manse in Dornoch, and a small hotel in another old manse at Tongue, with a sauna yurt and dinner every evening. Near Durness, an old schoolhouse sits above a beach looking out to the ocean. There are cottages by Loch Hope and Loch Eriboll, some with outdoor baths under the night sky. On the Kyle of Tongue, a restored drover's house for two has won an award for its architecture.
