Places to Stay by the Water in Argyll

In Argyll the sea reaches deep into the hills, and these places to stay look out over the water.

Curated and written by Hidden Scotland

Updated 23 September 2026. Across Argyll and Bute.

Argyll's coast winds in and out of long sea lochs, and much of the shoreline is quiet and wooded. There's something special about staying right on the edge of it. The first thing you see each morning is the water, and the last thing you hear at night is the lap of the loch.

We've picked out our favourite places to stay by the water in Argyll. There are off-grid bothies on Loch Nell, one right on the bank and one in the oak woods above it. There are cabins at the water's edge on Loch Fyne and Loch Goil, and one of them has a deck out over the loch. For a bigger party, there's a Victorian house on the shore of the Kyles of Bute, and another with a private beach on Loch Striven. Bring binoculars and a warm jumper, and spend the evenings watching the water.
