Cromarty is the place for a long browse, with a women's clothes shop full of colour, a cottage of gifts and galleries on Shore Street, and Scandinavian homewares behind a pale blue front. Along the coast in Fortrose, an illustrator draws lampshades of Scottish places by hand. At a farm shop near Conon Bridge you can buy fresh ice cream and cheeses. Further afield are tartan and hand-painted stoneware near Fearn, the Stoltman brothers' trophies in an Invergordon window, chocolate in Glenshiel and good bookshops in Ullapool. Bring a cool bag for the ice cream.

Chocolates of Glenshiel.

Finlay MacDonald grew up in Glenshiel and began experimenting with chocolate in his parents' kitchen at sixteen. Today he has his own kitchen, café and gift shop on the road through the glen, with the mountains and Loch Duich all around. His chocolate uses Highland flavours: foraged elderflower, whisky from Skye, gin from Harris, sea salt, tablet and even haggis spice. In the café the hot chocolate comes in different strengths, with whipped cream and homemade marshmallows if you like. Dogs are welcome, and it makes a perfect break on the long drive to Skye.

Black Isle Brewery.

On a farm at Old Allangrange, a few miles over the Kessock Bridge from Inverness, the Black Isle Brewery has made organic beer since 1998. Inside the big timber shed, steel tanks stand in rows, and stouts and porters age in wooden casks chalked with their dates. Outside are the polytunnels of the market garden that supplies the brewery's bars. The shop sells the whole range in brightly painted cans, and tours and workshops show how it is all made, so book those ahead. The brewery is a certified B Corporation.

Black Isle Dairy.

At Rootfield Farm, on the road above Conon Bridge, a small green timber shop sells dairy goods straight from the farm. The ice cream is the star: smooth, rich and not too sweet, with flavours such as honeycomb. The freezers hold tubs to take away, and the fridges are stocked with cheeses, yogurt, milk, honey and other treats from the farm and the area around it. It is an easy place to call into on the way to or from Inverness. Bring a cool bag if you want to take some home.

Ullapool Bookshop.

A few steps from the harbour in Ullapool, a small white building with bay windows holds an independent bookshop with shelves up to the ceiling. The range is a surprise for so small a shop. It leans towards Scotland, its writers, landscape, wildlife and history, with books by local authors and plenty for anyone who wants to know more about the north-west. There is good fiction too, a well-chosen children's section, and maps, postcards and locally made bookmarks. The welcome is friendly and there is no pressure to buy, so take your time.

In an old cottage on Shore Street in Cromarty, gallery48 is a gift shop downstairs and two small galleries upstairs. It opened in 2015 and has become part of any good wander round the town. The ground floor is full of unusual, well-made things: handmade pottery, cards, textiles, woollens and jewellery from many different makers. Upstairs, paintings and prints by a wide range of artists, many of them local, change regularly. The work is affordable as well as good.

Harbour Lane, Fortrose.

Harbour Lane is the shop of Tori, an illustrator and designer whose hand-drawn lampshades are the reason many people seek it out. Each one is drawn by hand and made to order, and many show Scottish places, including nearby Cromarty. She draws cushions and furniture too. The first Harbour Lane opened in South Queensferry in 2016, and this one on the High Street in Fortrose followed in 2024. Around her own work are gifts, jewellery, stationery, candles and books from more than a hundred makers. It is a bright, cheerful shop, close to the cathedral.
