The chip shop in Portknockie, a clifftop village on the Moray coast, is perhaps best known not for its haddock but for its Crunchy Fried Pop Pop Chicken.

The haddock and chips come to a predictably high standard, but it is the chicken that has made its name. The owner first developed it back in 1996, and the ingredients are still a secret. The village has a long story of its own. Portknockie was founded in 1677 and went on to become an important fishing port, with its streets and buildings huddled on a cliff above the harbour. Just offshore stands Bow Fiddle Rock, an improbably steep natural sea arch, so it is worth taking your supper along the clifftop for the view.

Sidings Café in Dufftown, on Speyside, is set in a pair of period railway carriages parked for good at the town's station.

Step aboard and the atmosphere is relaxed and in keeping with the 1950s, with breakfast rolls, home bakes, light lunches and afternoon tea on the menu. The station is also the end of the line for the Keith and Dufftown heritage railway, which climbs through pine forests and skirts a loch on its 11 miles from Keith, in period carriages of its own. That makes the café a natural stop before or after a ride on the train. Dufftown itself, often described as the malt whisky capital of the world, is worth a wander too.
