Welcome

In a quiet fold of Speyside near Knockando, a cluster of whitewashed buildings with red roofs holds one of the last district woollen mills in Scotland.

It was already working in 1784, when it was recorded as the Wauk Mill, and for generations local farmers brought their fleeces here to be turned into cloth and yarn.

By 2000 the mill was worn out, and a trust spent twelve years restoring it, taking the Victorian machinery apart and rebuilding it piece by piece. Today it runs again: a carding set from before 1900, a self-acting spinning mule of 1870 with 120 spindles, and Dobcross looms from the 1890s, weaving tweeds, blankets and fresh modern designs.

The shop sells the mill's own cloth and yarn, and the Red Roof Coffee shop serves barista coffee and home bakes. Well-behaved dogs on a lead are welcome in many areas. The mill opens from Tuesday to Saturday.
