There's a walk on Skye for every kind of day. You can climb to pinnacles above the Trotternish ridge, follow cliff paths to lonely headlands and lighthouses, or wander down to quiet beaches and cleared townships where the only company is sheep and seabirds. Some are an easy hour from the car, others a full day in wild country, and a few cross to tidal islands when the sea is low. Wear proper boots and waterproofs whatever the forecast says, check the tide where it matters, and leave plenty of daylight.

The lower parts of the landslip are as old as the last ice age or older, but the great upper blocks seem to have broken away within the last 15,000 years, long after the ice had gone.

The Fairy Glen, near Uig on Skye, was made by the ground slipping, not by fairies or by people.

Its little cone-shaped hills are what a series of landslips left behind after the ice melted, and the weather has been rounding them off ever since. It is the same process that made the Quiraing, further along the ridge to the east.

An Arctic-alpine flower, moss campion, grows at sea level on the cliffs of Rubha Hunish, at the northern tip of Skye.

The north-facing cliffs cannot be reached by grazing animals, so the plants on their ledges are left alone. Sea spleenwort and sea campion grow there beside Scots lovage, and beside moss campion, a mountain plant of the Arctic that it is unusual to find growing at sea level at all.
