Aberdeenshire

Tors, trails and riverside paths.

Aberdeenshire's walks suit every pace. Climb to the granite tor on top of a hill in Glen Dye, take the short, steep path to a monument above Banchory, or follow a riverside trail through a little blue door in an estate wall. There are waymarked loops through old pinewoods, a track to a high loch in the mountains, and coastal walks past fishing villages to long sands. Wear proper boots on the hills, as the weather turns quickly.

Johanna Basford, the Aberdeenshire illustrator behind the colouring book Secret Garden, records voice notes on her walks and later hears ideas like 'giant owl perched on a tiny house'.

Johanna calls herself a country girl at heart, and nature is her happy place, whether a walk up a hill or along a beach, through woodland or around a castle garden. Her best ideas often come to her while she is walking, so she grabs her phone and records a voice note before the inspiration slips away. When she listens back, her boots can be heard tramping through mud behind the words. In the studio she sketches each page in pencil, traces over it in ink and adds lots of detail before it is scanned. She has been told she could work faster digitally, but she adores drawing by hand, wobbly lines and all.
