Two thousand years of history at Fort George this weekend

Celebration of the Centuries returns to Fort George on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 August. It is Historic Environment Scotland's largest re-enactment event, and the timeline on show runs from the Roman legions through the medieval period and the wars of independence to the Napoleonic era and beyond. The headline act this year is a WW1 equestrian stunt show, telling the story of the horses that served in the Great War through riding displays and stunts.

There are also parades of historical characters, living history camps, live music, and guided tours of the fortress itself, including the Grand Magazine, where thousands of barrels of gunpowder were once stored. Kids can fight alongside Robert the Bruce in the Medieval Kids Army, which is exactly what it sounds like. The 1940s zone has big band performances.

Fort George is worth the trip on any weekend, mind. Built between 1747 and 1769 after Culloden, it was the biggest construction job the Highlands had ever seen and never fired a shot in anger. It sits on a spit jutting into the Moray Firth about eleven miles from Inverness, and dolphins pass close in on the right tide.
