The Powis Gates
Introduction
The Powis Gates are an historical landmark, located towards the north of the city, on the grounds of the University of Aberdeen’s King’s College campus. A 19th century structure, Powis Gates once served as a grand and ostentatious entrance to Powis House. The cylindrical towers and parapets, topped with caps made from slate, golden orbs and crescent finials, were designed by Alexander Fraser in 1833 for Hugh Fraser Leslie of Powis – a Scottish landowner who also had several coffee plantations in Jamaica, and who lived in Powis House from 1851. In 2007, the University of Aberdeen had the Powis Gates restored.
