Introduction

More than 2,500 plants are housed within the beautiful Cruickshank Botanic Garden, blooming in Old Aberdeen between St Machar’s Cathedral and the University of Aberdeen’s King’s College campus. The 11-acre Garden has been providing an abundance of colour and tranquillity to the area since 1898, when Anne Cruickshank presented the land to the university, in memory of her brother, Dr Alexander Cruickshank. The siblings’ father was previously the University of Aberdeen’s Regius Professor of Mathematics and the Botanic Garden continues his legacy, providing an educational resource for the students, as well as local schoolchildren.
