Welcome

There's something special about a links on old storm beaches, and that's exactly what you get at Spey Bay.

The course sits where the River Spey meets the Moray Firth, on ridges of shingle that built up some 6,000 years ago when the sea stood higher. Ben Sayers laid it out in 1907, out and back along the coast, with the fairways in the hollows and gorse and heather on the ridges. The wind decides how hard it plays on the day. Afterwards, the clubhouse has a full bar and food, and everyone is welcome.

Hole highlights

The first six holes head east and a little inland, and the short 8th, at the far end of the course, marks the turn for home.

  1. 7

    Wardie

    Par 4 · 385 yards

After six holes heading east, this is where the sea opens up in front of you. There are full views of the Moray Firth from here on.

  2. 8

    Plateau

    Par 3 · 131 yards

The signature hole. The green is raised and very shallow, with out of bounds to the left and beyond and a single pot bunker short on the left, so anything that comes in hot runs off the back. It's the third hardest hole on the card, and it plays best with the wind in your face.

  3. 15

    Sea

    Par 3 · 116 yards

A short, semi-blind hole over a big bunker at the front. The small round green almost backs onto the beach, so there's sand on every side if you count the shore.

  4. 18

    Home

    Par 4 · 329 yards

The last hole runs back to the clubhouse. The grand Richmond Gordon Hotel once looked down on this green, until it burned to the ground in 1965.
