Small Isles

Rum National Nature Reserve

Welcome

Almost the whole of Rum is a national nature reserve, run by NatureScot, and it is the wildest of the Small Isles: forty square miles of mountain, moor and empty coast with one village and no roads beyond the tracks.

The Rum Cuillin rise straight from the sea, the red deer at Kilmory have been studied for fifty years, and the hills hold one of the largest Manx shearwater colonies in the world, the birds coming in after dark. There is nothing to pay and no gate; you arrive by ferry at Kinloch and walk. Give it more than a day trip if you can, because the long tracks to Harris and Kilmory are the point.
