On the promenade at Portobello, a pale blue kiosk trimmed in white scrollwork, with an oval sign reading Oscar's and old barrels painted to match standing around it for tables, is where Edinburgh's seaside goes for gelato.

Oscar's makes gelato, not ice cream, and keeps a constantly changing range of more than thirty flavours, from chocolate to honeycomb. It comes in tubs or cones with a crisp wafer on top, and in 2026 it was named national champion in the Golden Scoop Awards. Most people carry theirs straight down to the sand, or along the prom towards Joppa.

The kiosk opens every day, and there is a second Oscar's on Portobello High Street for days when the wind off the Forth makes the prom too bracing.
