Nairn Golf Club
Links golf since 1887, par 71 over 6,832 yards. The sea is beside you for the first seven holes.
Nairn is seaside golf at its simplest and best, with the Moray Firth right beside you and the hills of the Black Isle across the water.
The Championship course runs west from the town of Nairn, on the coast between Inverness and Elgin, through heather, gorse and deep bunkers. It has hosted both the Walker Cup and the Curtis Cup, and halfway round there's a whitewashed salmon fishing bothy from 1877 serving refreshments. Non-golfing friends are welcome in the Whitelaw restaurant, and Inverness Airport is only about a quarter of an hour away.
Built for the salmon fishers of the Easter Delnies Fishing Station: four or five men lived here through the season, fishing from their cobles and from fixed nets. It stood further north until between 1904 and 1909, when it was taken down and rebuilt beside the Icehouse, most likely because the sea was taking the shore. Members could order a salmon from here during a round and have it at home that evening. The fishing stopped in the 1980s; now it is the halfway hut.
Partly underground, with thick walls under turf, it kept the catch fresh until it went to market. The ice came from nearby rivers or ponds, in through a small window at the back. Local tradition puts a Roman fort on this hillock; there is no hard evidence. The Bothy and the Icehouse are both listed, the best kept of their kind between here and the mouth of the Spey.
The fixed nets ran out from this shore, and the stumps of their wooden posts still show at low tide. In a good season the fishing station sent out more than 5,000 salmon.
Red stakes mark a penalty area. A ball in the burn can be dropped outside it, within two club-lengths of where it crossed the edge, for one stroke.

The first seven holes run west along the shore with the beach on your right, before the course turns back inland.
5Nets
The hardest hole on the card, with the beach tight on the right and a drive that has to carry the green of the 4th. Salmon were once caught along this shore in fixed nets, and their posts still show at low tide.

Icehouse
The green sits beside the Bothy and the Icehouse, built in 1877 for a salmon fishing station and now the halfway hut, so it's a good moment to stop.

Crown
The one real climb on the course, up to its most inland point, and one of the hardest holes on the card.

Kopjes
For many the signature hole: downhill from the highest tee, with the view over the firth to the Black Isle, to a green with a gully through the middle.

A par five to finish, back to the clubhouse and usually with the wind behind you.

The club is on Seabank Road in Nairn, IV12 4HB, about 15 miles east of Inverness.
Nairn station is just over a mile away, and Inverness Airport is about a quarter of an hour by car.
