Nairn Dunbar Golf Club

Links golf since 1899, par 72 over 6,691 yards. The course lies behind the dunes of Nairn's East Beach.

Welcome

There's nothing quite like links golf beside the Moray Firth, and Nairn Dunbar is a lovely place to play it.

The course lies behind the dunes of Nairn's East Beach, on the east side of the town. It opened in May 1899 with nine holes, on land given by Sir Alexander Dunbar of Boath, and grew to eighteen between the wars. From the white tees it's par 72 over 6,691 yards, starting among trees and opening out into gorse and links ground. The 4th to the 7th are the hardest stretch, and the short 8th, Brodie, is the club's signature hole. Afterwards, the clubhouse lounge looks out over the whole of the 18th.

Fairways seen over a fence from the roadside, with golfers in the distance, trees and houses beyond and a big white cloud.
The card

18 holes. Par 72 and 6,691 yards from the white tees, down to 5,467 from the blue.

Hole highlights

The four par fours from the 4th to the 7th are the hardest run of the round, and coming home, ditches cross the fairways at the 13th, 16th and 17th.

  1. 5

    View Hill

    Par 4 · 447 yards

Stroke index 1, and it often plays long into the prevailing wind. The green is long and narrow, with deep bunkers on both sides, and the club's own guide says many golfers are happy to walk off with a five.

  2. 8

    Brodie

    Par 3 · 164 yards

The club's signature hole, a short par three to a green sitting in a bowl, with steep slopes on three sides. A line of four deep bunkers guards the front, so get the distance right and there's a birdie chance.

  3. 11

    Bents

    Par 3 · 171 yards

One of three holes built after 1994, out at the turn. The green is angled from left to right, with steep run-offs in front and to the right, and it's a hard target to find in the wind.

  4. 13

    Long Peter

    Par 5 · 524 yards

The longest hole on the course. A ditch cuts across the fairway at an angle beyond two bunkers on the right, and the green has several levels for the pin.

  5. 18

    Merryton

    Par 5 · 495 yards

A par five home that long hitters can reach in two, unless the prevailing westerly is against them. The green is big and rolling, with steep slopes, and the whole hole is in view from the clubhouse lounge.
