Meall nan Tarmachan

A Munro of 1,044 metres above Loch Tay, climbed from the hill road between Loch Tay and Glen Lyon by its south-east ridge.

Welcome

Meall nan Tarmachan rises to 1,044 metres above Loch Tay in Perth and Kinross.

It is part of the Tarmachan range, and the Ben Lawers hills are its neighbours: Meall Corranaich is under four kilometres to the north-east and Ben Lawers between five and six. Most of the Tarmachan range lies within the Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve, which the National Trust for Scotland owns and manages and which is famous for its flora. On this hill's slopes the Trust is restoring the habitat, and young woodland is growing up as part of it.

The plants up here are easily damaged underfoot, so the Trust asks walkers to keep to the path as far as possible and to keep dogs under control. No avalanche forecast covers the hill, which does not mean there is no risk here under snow. The Mountain Weather Information Service's forecasts for the Southeastern Highlands and the West Highlands both reach this far, so read both. Deer stalking can take place at any time of year, Mountaineering Scotland says, so find out before you go. Choose a day with a good forecast, and carry a map, a compass and warm clothes.
