Ben Lawers

A Munro of 1,214 metres above the north shore of Loch Tay, climbed over Beinn Ghlas from the National Trust for Scotland's car park on the Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve.

Welcome

Ben Lawers rises to 1,214 metres above Loch Tay, the highest mountain in Tayside in the words of the National Trust for Scotland, which owns it.

The Trust bought the massif in 1950 to protect the arctic-alpine plants on its heights, and the hill gives its name to the Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve. More than 40,000 people explore these hills each year, the Trust says.

The usual way up starts from the Trust's car park on the reserve and crosses Beinn Ghlas, a Munro of its own, on the way to the top. The Trust built a zigzag path up the south-west ridge of Beinn Ghlas to control erosion on a popular route. The mountain plants are fragile, so keep to the path as far as possible, leave the plants where they grow, and keep dogs under control: local farmers graze the Trust's hill ground. No avalanche forecast covers Ben Lawers. Choose a day with a good forecast, and carry a map, a compass and warm clothes.
