Kochchi
A Sri Lankan restaurant on Ruthven Lane off Byres Road, with kotthu, hoppers and curries, from a street food business that began in a horse box in 2020.
Kochchi brings the food of Sri Lanka to a lane off Byres Road, and it's one of the liveliest places to eat in the West End.
Shehan Fernando and Suki Jayaratne started out in 2020 with a converted horse box, cooking the street food of Colombo, and Ruthven Lane is their first restaurant. Order kotthu, shredded flatbread cooked with curry and vegetables on the iron griddle, an egg hopper with pol sambol, devilled prawns or chicken, and curries of short rib or black pork, with short eats to start. The spices come from Sri Lanka, the meat, eggs and vegetables from Scottish farms, and the cocktails are made in house with Sri Lankan botanicals and spices. There's a balcony for a warm evening, and children are welcome. It's open every day from noon, and Hillhead subway station is a couple of minutes' walk away. Booking is recommended, but walk-ins are welcome too.
