John Muir Alpacas
Walking an alpaca along a farm track is a calm and slightly comic way to see East Lothian, and John Muir Alpacas outside Dunbar lets you do just that.
The small herd lives on a farm at Hedderwickhill, right on the John Muir Way. A trek takes an hour or so, with your alpaca on a halter beside you. The animals are gentle and curious rather than pushy, so they're lovely with children. For younger ones there are shorter meet-and-feed visits. Book ahead and wear boots, and bear in mind the farm closes in the worst of the winter weather. Belhaven Bay is a mile down the road, so you can finish with a walk on the beach.
