Loch Lomond and the Trossachs is where the Lowlands stop and the Highlands begin, right on the Highland Boundary Fault. There are big lochs to cruise and paddle, from Loch Lomond and its islands to Loch Katrine, where a steamer of 1899 still sails. Above them rise the Arrochar Alps, Ben Lomond and the Munros around Crianlarich, with small hills like Ben A'an and Conic Hill for shorter days. Add forest drives over the Duke's Pass, an island priory on the Lake of Menteith and the West Highland Way. Bring waterproofs and good boots, as the weather on the hills can change fast.

The Drovers Inn, near the head of Loch Lomond, was built over 300 years ago for cattle drovers, and today walkers on the West Highland Way stop there.

Drovers were the people who moved animals to market, pushing huge numbers of cattle along the old tracks, sometimes all the way from Skye or the far north Highlands. For the men bringing their herds down Loch Lomondside, this beefy stone inn promised a welcome relief. Now it is a popular pitstop for another kind of long-distance traveller. The West Highland Way, Scotland's most popular walking route since it opened in 1980, passes the inn on its way north. The 96-mile trek begins in a Glasgow suburb and weaves through forest, beside dark lochs and over field and moor to the mountains of Glen Coe.

Aberfoyle Old Parish Church.

Just south of Aberfoyle, at the Kirkton, the roofless old parish church stands in a kirkyard full of fine old gravestones. By the door lie two heavy iron mortsafes, cages laid over fresh graves to keep out the bodysnatchers who sold corpses to the medical schools. The best-known grave belongs to Robert Kirk, minister here in the late 1600s and author of The Secret Commonwealth, a study of fairies and second sight. Local legend says he never really died. A path climbs Doon Hill behind the old manse to the tree said to hold his spirit.

Balloch Castle Country Park.

Across the River Leven from Balloch, this is the only country park inside the national park: 200 acres of old woods, meadows and lawns running down to the shore of Loch Lomond. It was laid out as a private estate around Balloch Castle, a Gothic house of the early 1800s that was never really a castle at all. Wander between the Walled Garden with its pebble mosaic, the Chinese Garden and the Secret Garden, and find the Fairy Glen, where fairy houses have been carved into old tree stumps. The park is free and always open.
