Fingal’s Cave on Staffa

Add to List

Introduction

Take a boat trip to the enchanting Fingal’s Cave on Staffa. Many famous people have been inspired by this natural wonder, Mendelssohn with his Hebrides Overture, Keats and Wordsworth with their poems to mention a few… and its little wonder. What an amazing sight to behold. Sir Walter Scott described it perfectly in his quote: “..one of the most extraordinary places I ever beheld. It exceeded, in my mind, every description I had heard of it ...composed entirely of basaltic pillars as high as the roof of a cathedral, and running deep into the rock, eternally swept by a deep and swelling sea, and paved, as it were, with ruddy marble, baffles all description.” A trip to Fingal’s Cave really is a MUST if you are anywhere nearby. As well as this unbelievable sight you are also treated to spectacular scenery and the chance to see guillemots, fulmars, great skuas, gannets, puffins and razorbills as Staffa attracts a variety of sea birds. The boat trip also gives you an opportunity to see whales, dolphins and porpoises on the way. Start your trip at Fionnphort on Mull or from Iona pier.
