Carn na Caim

A Munro of 941 metres east of the A9 at Drumochter, near Dalwhinnie, climbed by a track from the A9 south of the Dalwhinnie turn.

Welcome

Carn na Caim, 941 metres, is one of the Drumochter hills, east of the A9 near Dalwhinnie.

It sits on a county line: the hills database files it under both Highland and Perth and Kinross. Its neighbour A' Bhuidheanach Bheag is about three miles to the south, and the two are often climbed together. Meall Chuaich is about seven kilometres to the north-east. The Cairngorms National Park Authority counts the Drumochter hills among the Park's mountains.

Walkers climb it from the A9 just south of the turn for Dalwhinnie, crossing that fast road on foot to a track that climbs to the high moorland plateau. There is no avalanche forecast for this hill, but under snow the risk is here all the same. Choose a day with a good forecast, and carry a map, a compass and warm clothes.

The Daily for 4 November, from Scotland with love. A pink sandstone castle bristling with conical turrets and a Union Jack flag rises above a gravel forecourt, autumn-tinged ivy climbing one wing beside cannon displayed on the lawn.
