Carn Gorm

A Munro of 1,030 metres on the north side of Glen Lyon, climbed from Invervar by its south-east ridge.

Welcome

Carn Gorm, 1,030 metres, is one of four Munros on the north side of Glen Lyon in Perthshire, above Invervar.

It is not Cairn Gorm in the Cairngorms. Its close neighbour, Meall Garbh, stands about two kilometres to the north-east, and Carn Mairg and Meall na Aighean further east. They are kept by North Chesthill Estate. Nine-tenths of the estate is open hill moorland, and the area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The estate publishes a recognised round of the four from Invervar, walked clockwise, with Carn Gorm its first summit, climbed by the south-east ridge. It stalks deer in the autumn and puts up notices in the car park and at the hill gate on stalking days. No avalanche forecast covers these hills, and under snow that does not mean there is no risk. Choose a day with a good forecast, and carry a map, a compass and warm clothes.

The Daily for 4 November, from Scotland with love. A pink sandstone castle bristling with conical turrets and a Union Jack flag rises above a gravel forecourt, autumn-tinged ivy climbing one wing beside cannon displayed on the lawn.
