Ben Vane
The smallest of the Arrochar Munros but one of the steepest, climbed from Inveruglas on Loch Lomond past Loch Sloy.
Ben Vane only just scrapes over the 3,000 feet that makes a Munro: a steep, rocky little mountain in the Arrochar Alps.
It rises above Loch Sloy, west of the head of Loch Lomond, and its climb is short by hill standards but relentless, with several false tops before the summit.
The walk starts at the car park at Inveruglas on the shore of Loch Lomond, where Citylink and Ember buses from Glasgow stop. From there a track leads in past the Inveruglas power station, then a path climbs the steep, rocky hillside to the top. It is possible to carry on down the steep west ridge and on to Beinn Ìme, but that is unrelentingly tough going, and most people climb Ben Vane on its own and come back the same way. It is about 11.5 kilometres with about 930 metres of climbing, about 4½ to 6 hours there and back.
