From the magazineJust nowThe Moulin Inn, above Pitlochry in Perthshire, has nothing to do with French windmills: its name comes from 'maohlinn', meaning small rounded hill.
The inn first opened its doors in 1695, a full quarter of a century before Bonnie Prince Charlie was born. It began as a modest house of three floors with two rooms on each, and one of those rooms doubled as a meeting place for the village elders. By the 1880s its reputation had earned it two extensions, with more rooms, more kitchen space and more places to drink. Step inside today and you will find wood panelling, stained glass, tartan curtains and snug tables, a pleasingly rustic setting for a drink by the fire, with good food to match.
