Aberdeen

Meat-free from Thistle Street to the sea.

Vegetarians and vegans eat happily in Aberdeen. On Thistle Street, a warm, homely café cooks entirely without meat, bakes its own sourdough and holds an open mic on Wednesdays. Its little hut on the beach esplanade serves vegan focaccia, sandwiches and cakes to take along the prom. In the Merchant Quarter, a lively sandwich café on the Green is known for big, inventive fillings and homemade soup. For an evening out, a Georgian townhouse on Golden Square pairs natural wines with good meat-free plates, in rooms that double as an art gallery. Ask about the specials, as menus change with the seasons.

Foodstory, a vegetarian café on Thistle Street in Aberdeen, was founded through a Kickstarter campaign.

Its on-trend name hints at its contemporary approach, and the menu is veggie and plant-based from breakfast through to lunch. The magazine called it brilliant, and said the food is only half the tale. As well as starting life on Kickstarter, the venture has run events, from reggae nights to yoga classes and craft workshops. It suits its city. Aberdeen, the Granite City, named for the glistening local stone of its grandest buildings, is today a place of street-art festivals, on-trend restaurants and high-class museums, and Foodstory is one of the warmest rooms to sit in between them.
