Architect-Designed Places to Stay in Argyll

In Argyll some places to stay are as much about the building as the view, from off-grid cabins made for the shore to a Baronial house with a Lorimer library. Here the design is half the pleasure.

Good design and a wild setting go well together. On the west coast the weather comes in off the sea and the view changes by the hour. Several of the newest places to stay here are small and simple, with big windows and very little between you and the loch. Older houses here were built to impress in quite a different way.

We've picked out the places where the building is the star. On the shore of Loch Fyne there are award-winning off-grid cabins, made off-site and set well apart along the water. Near Appin, contemporary cabins for couples look across to Castle Stalker, and one is clad in cedar with a glass front and a sunken, mosaic-tiled hot tub. On Loch Nell there's an architect-designed bothy you reach by boat or on foot. On the edge of Oban, a Baronial house from 1897 has a library added by Sir Robert Lorimer in 1926.
