Wester Ross

Gairloch, Tornapress and Plockton harbour.

Eating out in Wester Ross means good food in small places, often with a mountain or a loch outside the window. In Gairloch, a timber-lined coffee house is known for its scones and has a bookshop through the door. At Tornapress, where the road to Applecross starts its climb over the Bealach na Bà, a little café serves soups and home baking. In Plockton, an inn and a family-run hotel on the harbour cook the seafood landed on this coast. Villages are far apart here, so plan where you'll stop before you set off.

Laurie Goodlad, a fisherman's daughter, joined the long queue at The Seafood Shack, a food trailer behind the harbour in Ullapool.

‘Diners can choose to take their food away or eat it at one of the wooden benches outside the trailer. We were lucky enough to get a table, and the sun was shining, which was a bonus. What The Seafood Shack proves is that seafood doesn’t have to be complicated. You don’t need a vast kitchen or a swanky West End restaurant.’
