Shetland Islands

Shetland yarn and glass from Uyeasound.

Shopping in Shetland is about things made, grown or written in the islands. In Lerwick, the wool brokers on North Road buy most of the islands' clip straight off the crofts and sell it back as the yarn that Fair Isle and lace are knitted from. On Commercial Street, a family bookshop aims to hold every book about Shetland in print, and a narrow gallery shows the islands' painters. Up on Unst, a glass studio at Uyeasound makes pieces in the greens of serpentine and the greys of a haar, and you can watch them being made. Leave room in your case for wool.

You are up to date.

That is everything for today. Tomorrow's first posts go up in the morning. Or have the best of it in your inbox each morning in the Daily.
