Perthshire has some excellent coffee, much of it roasted just down the road. You'll find speciality roasters with cafés in Aberfeldy and Kinross, a much-loved bakery in Dunkeld, and friendly cafés in Perth and Pitlochry pouring a proper flat white. They're ideal for a morning stop before a walk, or a warm-up after one. Most bake their own cakes too, so it's worth arriving hungry.

ARAN, Flora Shedden's bakery in Dunkeld, Highland Perthshire, became so well loved that when it needed more room to bake, its customers offered up their garages and unused outbuildings.

Flora opened ARAN in her home town two years after reaching the semi-finals of The Great British Bake Off, with crowdfunding, grants and help from family and friends, and its name comes from the Gaelic for bread. She has had no formal training, and insists that 'instinct not alchemy' goes into her work. When the magazine visited, the baking had moved to nearby Birnam so that the little shop on Atholl Street could stock more, and even so the day's bakes tended to sell out by 3pm. The bakery still warns that it may sell out and close early, so go in the morning.

ARAN Bakery, in Dunkeld, was opened by a semi-finalist of the Great British Bake Off.

Flora Shedden was the youngest semi-finalist of the BBC's Great British Bake Off in 2015, and went on to open her bakery in Dunkeld, in Highland Perthshire. She named it Aran, the Scottish Gaelic word for bread or a loaf.

The walls of Hettie's Tearoom in Pitlochry, Highland Perthshire, are decorated with original artworks by Bev Nicol, the artist known as 'Daughter of the Stag'.

Hettie's opened in 2010 and has been scooping awards ever since. The cracking little tearoom serves its own loose-leaf teas, alongside homemade soups, sandwiches, scones, traybakes, cheesecakes and more, so there is plenty to linger over while you take in the art. Look out for the artworks as you settle in. Pitlochry, on the River Tummel, is a popular stop for travellers heading north into the Highlands, and Hettie's makes a cheerful place to break the journey.
