Brochs and ancient towers.

Long before the clans built their castles, Iron Age people raised round drystone towers called brochs, and Skye and the coast nearby still have some remarkable ones. Some stand surprisingly tall, with stairs and galleries hidden inside their double walls. Others are tumbled ruins on knolls with a view over the sea lochs. Standing inside one, it's hard to believe they're around two thousand years old. Most are a short walk from the road, and they make a fine excuse to stop on a drive.
